The Olympics in Beijing. Will this be the debute of the first genetically altered human athlete? It’s not as far fetched as you think.

As a side bet, I’d wager heavily that the first genetically modified athletes will be seen in the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing competing in sports dependent on strength and muscle mass by utilizing a method called RNA interference (RNAi). RNAi, and similar mechanisms, “knock down”, or minimize the functioning of a specific gene’s expression even in fully developed complex organisms. The delivery system has been developed, the RNAi fairly simple to design and fabricate, and all these services are available on-line for a modest fee. Mice have been genetically modified to lower their cholesterol levels by targeting a gene in fully developed animals. Myostatin must be a priority target since it normally signals muscles at what point to stop growing. It may sound terrifying now, but like all technology, as a society we will learn to accept it. This is the beginning of what some have termed Post Darwinian Evolution.
