The Olympics in 2012. Will this be the debute of the first genetically altered human athlete? It’s not as far fetched as you think.

As a side bet, I’d wager heavily that the first genetically modified athletes will be seen in the 2012 summer Olympics competing in sports dependent on strength and muscle mass by utilizing a method called RNA interference (RNAi). RNAi, and similar mechanisms, “knock down”, or minimize the functioning of a specific gene’s expression even in fully developed complex organisms. The delivery system has been developed, the RNAi fairly simple to design and fabricate, and all these services are available on-line for a modest fee. Mice have been genetically modified to lower their cholesterol levels by targeting a gene in fully developed animals. Myostatin must be a priority target since it normally signals muscles at what point to stop growing. It may sound terrifying now, but like all technology, as a society we will learn to accept it. This is the beginning of what some have termed Post Darwinian Evolution.
